Who We Are
We are a psychology laboratory, under the direction of Dr. Traci Mann, that has traditionally focused on the self-control of health behaviors, and in particular, the self-control of eating. Over the years, as we have become increasingly convinced that dieting does not lead to long-term weight loss, we have been exploring the idea of a health-focused approach to eating (and exercise), rather than a diet-focused approach.
The idea is quite simple: Engaging in healthy behavior (such as sensible eating, regular exercise, and stress-reducing activities) makes you healthier, even if it doesn’t make you thinner. The hard part is convincing people to engage in these behaviors – in the long term – without the promise of weight loss.
In the Health and Eating Lab, we approach this difficult problem from many different angles.
